How I Found My Signature Look Without Selling My Soul (Or My Hair)

If I Teach You Nothing Else, Let It Be This: Find Your Signature Look

If I teach you nothing else, I want you to leave knowing that I am the biggest advocate for finding your signature look.

It took me a while to find mine because there were a lot of looks I loved on myself. I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to commit to, which one felt the most me, until I finally locked in.

As a woman, I believe a signature look is your identity.
It’s something people associate with you.
It’s something you hold all the power over.
It’s the narrative you control. The story you tell.
One hundred percent ball in your court.

And honestly, it’s the one thing you can be a control freak about without anyone calling you crazy. Because it’s you controlling you.

So here are three things I did that helped me discover my signature look — and why I love it so much.

Number One: Notice What Consistently Flatters You

I started paying attention to three main things.
The first was makeup looks I always felt confident in.

My big three have always been:

  • No makeup makeup
  • Bronzer (aka giving myself a tan while keeping my face and neck matching)
  • Highlight on the inner corners of my eyes, the tip of my nose, and the cupid’s bow

Those three never fail me. No matter where I’m going or what I’m doing, one of those looks is guaranteed to eat. And I know I’m going to get compliments from men and women.

Next, I became aware of colors that made me glow.

In the winter, my colors are more neutral earth tones, nudes, and blues. They complement my complexion when I pale out and bring life to my face without washing me out.

In the summer, it’s orange and pink. Once I’m tan, those colors pop off my skin whether my hair is light or dark. My hair becomes the cherry on top.

And hair? That was the third piece.

For the longest time, I thought my signature was straight hair. I felt like people viewed me as more mature, more sexy, more polished that way.

But as I grew to love myself and accept what I was naturally given, I realized I prefer my hair curly. It complements my face better. It feels more like me. It makes me stand out. Lots of girls have curls, but very few have big curls and orange curls on top of that.

I feel the most like myself when I look like myself.
Which is wild to say, because I used to be obsessed with having the straightest, longest hair.

Now when my hair is straight, I can’t wait to get back to curls.

Your signature lives where you feel effortless not where you feel like you’re performing.

Number Two: Pick One or Two Beauty Non Negotiables

You have to choose your beauty standouts.

It can be anything:

  • Bold lips
  • Soft glowy skin
  • Dramatic lashes
  • Slick hair
  • Statement brows

For me, my non negotiables are my lips and my brows.

It does not matter the day.
It does not matter the event.
It does not matter the time.

My brows are always thick and shaped.
My lips are always lined with brown lip liner and topped with shiny gloss.

That is my signature.

People expect it from me.
They know I’m going to have a brow pen.
They know I’m going to have gloss.

Your signature look is what people associate with you instantly.

Number Three: Let Your Lifestyle and Personality Lead

Your look should match your energy. That’s my number one rule.

When I bleached my hair and it turned orange, it worked because it matched my personality. I’m vibrant. I’m bold. I do what I want, when I want. What makes me happy does not have to make you happy. This is my life.

My personality helped shape my signature.

My thick brows? I was born with them.
But I spent years thinning them out in middle school because I wanted to blend in. I wanted to look softer. I didn’t want to stand out because attention wasn’t always kind.

Even when I pretended not to care, the comments eventually affected me.

And then I grew up and watched people pay to have the same brows that naturally grow out of my face.

That taught me something important:

Your signature isn’t about copying. It’s about repeating what already feels like home.

What feels like home for me aligns with my lifestyle, my personality, and the features I was born with.

How to Find Yours

If you’re trying to find your signature look, think about these three things and make a list:

  • What consistently flatters you
  • Your non negotiable beauty habits
  • What matches your lifestyle and personality

The answers are already there.

Your signature look does not have to be trendy.
It does not have to be viral.
It does not have to be what other people like.

If it were meant to be trendy, it wouldn’t be your look.

And honestly?
There is nothing more badass than a woman with a signature look.
Everyone knows what she’s going to wear.
How she’s going to do her hair.
How her makeup is going to look.

If people aren’t talking about you, you don’t have a signature look.
And if they don’t like it?

Screw them.

It’s better to be talked about than to do the talking.
